BULLEEN · ON THE GROUND
A Bulleen garden starts with the ground.
The low ground is the defining feature.
Bulleen's position on the river flats means parts of the suburb sit on heavier, wetter soil that drains slowly. Design here lives or dies on getting the levels, the fall and the drainage right before anything gets planted. Done well, that low, fertile ground grows a garden beautifully.
There's a productive streak worth leaning into.
With Heide's kitchen gardens as the local benchmark, a lot of Bulleen briefs have room for the edible and the practical: a veg patch, fruit trees, a working corner, designed in properly rather than tacked on.
The blocks are roomy, with established planting.
As with most of Manningham's older gardens, the design work is often resolving good bones that have gone wild: keeping the maturity, fixing the structure and the wet corner that's never quite worked.
Levels and drainage are worth resolving on paper.
On the lower ground, where the water goes decides what survives. Working it out at the drawing stage costs nothing; discovering it after the paving is down costs a great deal.

Why design before you plant.
It's tempting to start with a trip to the nursery. The trouble is a garden isn't a collection of plants: it's a set of spaces that connect to the house and to each other. Get the structure right first, levels, sightlines, where you sit, what you screen, and the planting becomes the easy part. Skip it, and you spend years (and a fair bit of money) moving things that were never going to work where they went.
On a Bulleen block, getting the structure right early also means getting the drainage and the slope right early, which is far cheaper than fixing it after the fact.

After three decades in graphic design and advertising, Bruce Williams took the Postgraduate Certificate of Garden Design, finishing with Distinction, and turned a designer's eye on the backyard. The instincts carry over: composition, restraint, and making something that genuinely works for the people using it. His gardens lean on native and drought-tolerant planting, recycled materials where they earn their place, and water used carefully.
