SURREY HILLS · ON THE GROUND
A Surrey Hills garden should suit its era.
The houses set the tone.
Surrey Hills' Federation and Edwardian homes carry a gentle formality: front gardens that frame the verandah, hedging, a sense of order. A design that ignores that always looks slightly off. I work to the era: structure and planting that feel of a piece with the house.
The blocks are tighter, so the design has to be precise.
Typically smaller than Balwyn's grand ones. Front gardens matter enormously here for street presence, and back gardens have to do a lot in a modest footprint, which is exactly where a proper plan pays off.
Established trees come under local protection.
Street and garden trees are part of the suburb's appeal, so designs work with the mature canopy and within the tree rules rather than clearing and starting over.
The side return is usually wasted space.
On tighter blocks the strip down the side is often written off as storage. Designed properly it's a real part of the garden and it makes the whole block feel bigger.

Why design before you plant.
It's tempting to start with a trip to the nursery. The trouble is a garden isn't a collection of plants: it's a set of spaces that connect to the house and to each other. Get the structure right first, levels, sightlines, where you sit, what you screen, and the planting becomes the easy part. Skip it, and you spend years (and a fair bit of money) moving things that were never going to work where they went.
On a Surrey Hills block, getting the structure right early also means getting the drainage and the slope right early, which is far cheaper than fixing it after the fact.

The instincts carry over: composition, restraint, and making something that genuinely works for the people using it. His gardens lean on native and drought-tolerant planting, recycled materials where they earn their place, and water used carefully.
