RINGWOOD · ON THE GROUND
A Ringwood garden should work with the slope, not against it.
The ground moves here.
Ringwood's undulating blocks mean a lot of gardens deal with a real fall across the site, and that's an opportunity. Terraces, a few steps and some considered levels turn a slope from an awkward, hard-to-mow problem into the most interesting thing about the garden.
The character runs natural and bushy.
More so than the formal inner-east suburbs, so designs here often lean into that: hardy, lower-maintenance planting and a relaxed structure that suits the setting and the way people live out this way.
A lot of blocks are generous but unplanned.
Established trees and good potential that's never been given a plan. The design job is to bring order to that potential: a clear structure that makes a big, leafy block usable rather than just large.
Materials should weather, not date.
In a bushy setting, timber, gravel and stone settle in and look better with age. Highly finished materials tend to fight the surroundings and show their year.

Why design before you plant.
It's tempting to start with a trip to the nursery. The trouble is a garden isn't a collection of plants: it's a set of spaces that connect to the house and to each other. Get the structure right first, levels, sightlines, where you sit, what you screen, and the planting becomes the easy part. Skip it, and you spend years (and a fair bit of money) moving things that were never going to work where they went.
On a Ringwood block, getting the structure right early also means getting the drainage and the slope right early, which is far cheaper than fixing it after the fact.

After three decades in graphic design and advertising, Bruce Williams took the Postgraduate Certificate of Garden Design, finishing with Distinction, and turned a designer's eye on the backyard. The instincts carry over: composition, restraint, and making something that genuinely works for the people using it. His gardens lean on native and drought-tolerant planting, recycled materials where they earn their place, and water used carefully.
