The land rolls.

The streets between Doncaster Hill and the Mullum Mullum and Koonung creek corridors sit on undulating ground, so a lot of backyards fall away or climb toward the rear fence. Left alone, that means runoff, a soggy low corner, and a lawn that's hard to use. Designed properly, the slope becomes the best thing about the garden: a low retaining wall, a level terrace for a table, a reason for steps.

The soil is heavy clay.

Like most of Melbourne's east, the ground here is clay-dominant: slow to drain in winter, bakes hard in summer. It's the single biggest reason new plantings sulk or die. I design around it: raised beds where they're needed, the right soil profile, and species that actually want to live in Manningham clay rather than fight it.

The houses have aged into their gardens.

A lot of homes around Jackson Court and Tunstall Square are original 70s and 80s builds with good bones and an established garden that's quietly lost its shape: overgrown screening, a lawn doing all the work, no real connection between indoors and out. That's my favourite brief: not a blank slate, a garden waiting to be resolved.

Aspect decides where the good rooms go.

Which way the back garden faces determines where you'll actually sit in February and where nothing will grow. It's the first thing I check on site and it usually reorders the whole plan.

I work with what's there far more often than I clear it. A lot of established Doncaster East gardens have mature trees and good structure worth keeping: the design job is editing and resolving, not bulldozing.
